    Basic Skills Battery Charging A built-in battery is installed in the Pocket PC. When using the Pocket PC for the first time, set the battery switch to the supply side, then charge the built-in battery with the supplied AC adaptor. How to Charge the Battery You can use two charging methods.

  • Page 22 Basic Skills To connect Remote Control-Fitted Earphone Microphone You can listen to the sound output from your Pocket PC by connecting the optional remote control-fitted earphone microphone. (See Quick Start Card.) Insert the remote control-fitted earphone plug into the stereo headphone jack as shown in the figure below.

    Basic Skills Navigation Bar and Command Bar The navigation bar is located at the top of the screen. It displays the active program and current time, and allows you to switch to programs and close screens. Use the command bar at the bottom of the screen to perform tasks in the open program.

    Basic Skills Pop-up Menus With pop-up menus, you can quickly choose an action for an item. For example, you can use the pop-up menu in the contact list to quickly delete a contact, make a copy of a contact, or send an e-mail message to a contact.

    Basic Skills Enter Information on Your Pocket PC You have several options for entering new information: Use the input panel to enter typed text by using the soft keyboard or other input method. Write directly on the screen. Draw pictures on the screen. Speak into your Pocket PC microphone to record a message.
  • Page 31 Basic Skills When you use the input panel, your Pocket PC anticipates the word you are typing or writing and displays it above the input panel. When you tap the displayed word, it is inserted into your text at the insertion point. The more you use your Pocket PC, the more words it learns to anticipate.

    Basic Skills To use Block Recognizer: With Block Recognizer you can input character strokes using the stylus that are similar to those used on other devices. Tap the arrow next to the Input Panel button and then Block Recognizer. Write a letter in the box. When you write a letter, it is converted to typed text that appears on the screen.
  • Page 33 Basic Skills To write on the screen: Tap the Pen button to switch to writing mode. This action displays lines on the screen to help you write. Tap the Pen button and use your stylus like a pen. Some programs that accept writing may not have the Pen button. See the documentation for that program to find out how to switch to writing mode.
  • Page 34 Basic Skills To convert writing to text: Tap Tools and then Recognize. If you want to convert only certain words, select them before tapping Recognize on the Tools menu (or tap and hold the selected words and then tap Recognize on the pop-up menu). If a word is not recognized, it is left as writing.
  • Page 35 Basic Skills If the conversion is incorrect, you can select different words from a list of alternates or return to the original writing. To do so, tap and hold the incorrect word (tap one word at a time). On the pop-up menu, tap Alternates.

    Basic Skills Recording a Message In any program where you can write or draw on the screen, you can also quickly capture thoughts, reminders, and phone numbers by recording a message. In Calendar, Tasks, and Contacts, you can include a recording in the Notes tab.

    Basic Skills Using My Text When using Inbox or MSN Messenger, use My Text to quickly insert preset or frequently used messages into the text entry area. To insert a message, tap My Text and tap a message. Tap to select a prewritten message. You can add text after inserting a My Text message before sending it.

    Basic Skills Find and Organize Information The Find feature on your Pocket PC helps you quickly locate information. On the menu, tap Find. Enter the text you want to find, select a data type, and then tap Go to start the search. To quickly find information that is taking up storage space on your Pocket PC, select Larger than 64 KB in Type.

Adjusting Settings You can adjust device settings to suit your preferences. To see available options, tap , Settings, then the Personal or System tab located at the bottom of the screen.

Connect your Pocket PC and desktop computer. Double-click the *.exe file. If the file is an installer, the installation wizard will begin. Follow the directions on the screen.

If you do not see the program listed, you can either use File Explorer on the Pocket PC to move the program to the Start Menu folder or use ActiveSync on the desktop computer to create a shortcut to the program and place the shortcut in the Start Menu folder.

When finished, tap OK to return to the System tab screen. If storage cards are inserted both in the CF card slot and the SD card slot, the usage status is displayed only for one (basically, the firstly inserted one) of these cards.

Synchronization compares the data on your Pocket PC with your desktop computer and updates both computers with the most recent information.
  • Page 47 Microsoft ActiveSync After installation is complete, the ActiveSync Setup Wizard helps you connect your Pocket PC to your desktop computer, set up a partnership so you can synchronize information between your Pocket PC and your desktop computer, and customize your synchronization settings. Your first synchronization process will automatically begin when you finish using the wizard.

E-mail messages in subfolders must be selected in ActiveSync on your desktop computer in order to be transferred. To switch to a companion program on your Pocket PC, tap Programs on menu, and then tap the program name.

To format existing text and to edit text, first select the text. You can select text as you do in a Word document, using your stylus instead of the mouse to drag through the text you want to select.

Ruled lines are displayed as a guide, and the zoom magnification is greater than in typing mode to allow you to write more easily. When you lift your stylus off the screen after the first stroke, you’ll see a drawing box indicating the boundaries of the drawing.     Companion Programs Microsoft Reader Use Microsoft Reader to read eBooks on your Pocket PC. Download books to your desktop computer from your favorite eBook Website. Then, use ActiveSync to copy the book files to your Pocket PC. The books appear in the Reader Library. Each book consists of a cover page, an optional table of contents, and the pages of the book.

You have the following connection options: Use the infrared (IR) port on your Pocket PC to send and receive files between two devices.

Tap and hold the item you want to send, and then tap Beam File on the pop-up menu. To receive information: Align the IR ports so that they are unobstructed and within a close range.
