Important: Refer to your engine operator's manual for additional maintenance procedures.
If you leave the key in the ignition switch, someone could accidently start the engine and
seriously injure you or other bystanders.
Remove the key from the ignition and disconnect the wire from the spark plug before you do
any maintenance. Set the wire aside so that it does not accidentally contact the spark plug.

Removing and Installing the
Engine Hood
1. To remove the hood, loosen the knobs and
then pull the hood back and up (Figure 17).
Maintenance Procedure
• Change the engine oil.
• Check the safety interlock system.
• Check the engine oil level.
• Check the cutting blades.
• Clean the mower housing.
• Grease all lubrication points.
• Clean the foam air lter element (more often in dirty or dusty conditions).
• Check tire pressure.
• Check the belts for wear/cracks.
• Change the engine oil.
• Check the battery electrolyte level.
• Replace the paper air lter element (more often in dirty or dusty
conditions).
• Change the oil lter (model 74420 only).
• Replace spark plug.
• Replace fuel lter.
• Drain the fuel tank.
• Charge the battery and disconnect battery cables.
• Perform all maintenance procedures listed above before storage.
• Paint any chipped surfaces.
